Event Description

"In a 21st century world where jobs can be shipped wherever there's an Internet connection...education is no longer just a pathway to opportunity and success, it's a prerequisite for success." With these words, our new administration has issued a call to create world-class schools, benchmarked to international standards that prepare our students with the knowledge and skills they need in a new and changing world.

In 2009, as new leadership comes to Washington D.C., the Asia Society Partnership for Global Learning is hosting its second annual national forum from July 9-11, 2009 at the Marriot Crystal Gateway in Arlington, VA.

The Asia Society Partnership for Global Learning conference will address these issues and more. How do we define global competence, how do we recognize it in student work and how can economic stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) be used to transform schools to produce students ready for college and a global economy? We will also address: benchmarking to world standards and practices, building the capacity of teachers to teach about the world, creating new models of elementary school, and will debut new tools for schools to assess "how global are we?".

Speakers include Linda Darling-Hammond, professor of education, Stanford University; Tony Wagner, author of The Global Achievement Gap; and Andreas Schleicher, OECD's top expert on international benchmarking and best practices.

The Partnership will also seek to engage the new administration and will be looking for feedback from attendees to help shape what excellence in policy and practice to advance international education will look like in the future.

To register for the conference and become a member of the Partnership for Global Learning, please visit www.asiasociety.org/forum.

I wish I could attend this event! I'll be presenting at a conference called iSummit in Memphis and then off to Orlando to attend the 2009 Apple Distiniguished Educator Institute at this time.

Are there plans to offer streaming video of sessions? Or, will sessions be recorded and posted at a later date? It would be great to see elements added to the conference that allowed for virtual participation. To see what's possible, take a look at the Educon "Unconference" held annually at a high school in Philly: http://educon21.wikispaces.com/
